2008 Edinburgh Fringe Reviews

Edinburgh-On-Sea

This is the second of the two shows playing in the swimming pool at the plush Apex hotel. Both shows are hosted by Liz Bentley but this is a show with Liz and her friends entertaining us as opposed to Liz’s solo show. In this show we had the delectable Scarlet Billows who is a Weimar republic girl singing songs in a Teutonic accent including a version of Mack the Knife and Shine On You Crazy Diamond, the poet(ess) Rachel Pantechnicon who has written a very dubious children’s book, Alexis Dubus who is performing a show about the history of swearing but found it hard to get the audience to say rude words (though he did jump in the pool fully dressed which got a cheer) and Simon (last name missed but he was quite good so only myself to blame) who gave us some poetry in the pool.

There were games and competitions and a very silly game of pool pool with a surprise ending. The audience are invited to come in for a swim but the pool is not quite warm enough, full of chlorine and Liz mentions a few times the possibility of ear infections so I just paddled. Hopefully the sauna will be fixed for the next show as that would make for a very relaxing end to a thoroughly enjoyable hour of entertainment. Liz also has an attractive female assistant and a lifeguard who was attracting lot of attention from the ladies in the audience, so even if you have trouble hearing because of the splashing, you can always pretend you’re in an Esther Williams film.
