2008 Edinburgh Fringe Reviews

Greg Fleet – Secrets and Lies

Greg has been performing for a very long time and this is a show that incorporates some of his favourite material and some new stories, and is a show which allows us a glimpse into the warped and twisted mind that is Greg. The show starts with Greg announcing himself over a Ramones track and then gently massaging the ego of the audience. Greg tells us about his new digs in Edinburgh and how many historical sites there are around the town and how proud he is of the ‘special’ corner under his flat.

We then are treated to a series of stories from Greg’s life, not all of which are true. Greg, having led a very eventful life, has many tales of madness and silliness which he could regale the audience with but he limits himself to just a couple. We hear the tale of his encounter with Stephen Fry and the hideous embarrassment that ensues. We learn why chatting to audience members while making shark jokes is not a wise move. We learn why making a suit commercial is not as easy as it first seems and finally we learn why taking a canoe ride while on LSD could have alarming consequences.

Greg is a consummate performer who has a wealth of material with which he could regale us and he has chosen some of his favourites for this year’s show. He surprises the audience on many occasions but manages to keep them happy with his twisted reasoning behind some of his more outrageous utterances. The show finishes with a poem called the ballad of Sconnie Doo, which is both corny and scary, and a perfect end to the evenings entertainment
