Lady Garden
This is a sketch show written and performed by six young (I’d say around the 20 mark) ladies. The ladies perform the sketches wearing black leotards and leggings. We start the afternoon with an audio sketch about the festival then move into some contemporary dance/feminist theatre, which is a very hard art-form to parody but the ladies do a good attempt at being even more ridiculous than the original. At this point of the show, many in the audience were worried that this was serious and that they would have to endure an hour of dancing wimmin. Luckily the next sketch, the first in a running series of parodies of a very recent Australian tourism ad set them at ease.

From this point we were subjected to a series of short sketches on such diverse subjects as the supermarket that branched out into a variety of helplines, how to ‘sex up’ the news, a pair of street-talkin’ yokels, a job interview where the correct boxes need to be ticked, the maid-of-honour with the rappin’ style and the backing posse, and a fitness instructor called Bev. Bev gives us advice on how to lose weight and then sings us an inspiring song about the subject (to the tune of Total Eclipse Of The Heart). She sings it very badly (the notes, not the delivery) and has two backing singers who perform some of the best dance moves of the show. Keep watching them is my advice.
The show runs for just under an hour and, from the smooth transfer between sketches, the confident delivery and the total lack of missed/stuffed up lines, I can only assume this has been touring round the country for a while. The ladies do a very professional job and even if the sketches aren’t the most cutting edge on the humour block, they are funny, entertaining and well-performed. The perfect way to spend an hour in the afternoon. There is a little swearing but no nudity, though this was implied in the programme. So you can bring your grannie and she won’t be shocked.
