2008 Edinburgh Fringe Reviews

Liz Bentley-On-Sea

A different kind of venue here as the audience are sat beside an indoor swimming pool. This of course means problems with audio as the walls bounce sound and the water absorbs it, but anyone who has tried to talk at an indoor pool will know this. The show starts with a recorded audio while Liz swims a few laps. The audio starts seriously but devolves into an obsessive piece about home delivered organic vegetables. This is then continued by ‘live’ Liz as she emerges from the water and sings us a song about the vegetables while playing the ukulele. Next we have some chat and a song on the cheap Casio that is treated cruelly by Liz about the joys of therapy (Liz is a therapist). We then have more chat, some games, and some stories about her youth in the pool and her love for one of her son’s teachers.

The show lasts about 45 minutes and Liz is a pleasant and engaging host as she floats about the pool. The songs were funny though I missed some of the words due to the aforementioned audio problems. An enjoyable time was had with the small audience (maximum 22 people) and you even have the chance to paddle.
