The Sushi Tap Show
This has been billed as a Japanese comedy tap show, but it is so much more. The show takes place in the Greenside theatre, which nestles at the foot of Calton Hill, so take a walk up the hill and watch the sun setting over Edinburgh before the show starts (as long as the rain has stopped).
The show starts with the girls Naoji and Maki on stage tapping out a piece of classical music while Poeki frantically conducts them. Then we have a tap routine which flows into a silent comedy sketch which ends in one of the funniest spoon playing routines I’ve seen in a long while. The next scene is a noir silent drama with some slinky costumes, gunplay and cup juggling. See whether Poeki can perform the six cup juggle in less than four attempts (I think at least three were staged failures though). Next is Naoji in a long white dress doing baton twirling while performing a comic dance to Charles Aznavour’s She. The next routine starts with Poeki as a schoolgirl (and I won’t say he looks cute in those pigtails) demonstrating an old Japanese childrens game, before Naoji and Maki appear of stage performing Riverdance and spoiling his fun. The finale of the show is a tap routine where the audience are challenged to clap responses to the taps.
There was a good sized and exuberant audience attending the show and the three dancers on stage were full of energy and clearly enjoying themselves immensely. The stage was never empty for more than a few seconds as the three had everything planned so that one would perform a solo routine or sketch until the others had time to change into their next costumes. One or two small juggling mishaps occurred due to the sloping roof but I’m sure once they have become comfortable with the performance space they’ll be fine. I don’t understand why this show starts so late though (10pm), as this would be a great show to take the whole family to. No swearing or violence, great dancing very funny acting and an action pack
