MagiComedy
MagiComedy is heavier on the magic side of things than the comedy but it does provide enjoyable light entertainment nonetheless. While not purely a kids show, there were quite a few children in the audience and it is definitely family-friendly as advertised.

What was not advertised was the duration of the show, and at $18 for an adult ticket I would have expected more than 45-50 minutes, especially considering there were three acts on the bill. This was a disappointment and when the show ended rather abruptly, some of us were left sitting there looking at each other as if to ask, “Oh, is it over now?”
Mat Unwin did not really succeed in his role as MC to create or maintain a sense of energy among the audience. Sue Ann came out in a blue velvet suit to amaze us with the magic rings, while dancing to the soundtrack of Austin Powers. She then transformed two volunteers from the audience into the Blues Brothers and got them to assist her with a rope trick. Sue Ann added some much needed vibrancy but her part could have been longer, leaving the show unbalanced overall.
The highlight was final act, Anthony DemAsi. He provided most of the humour of the entire show with loads of great prop comedy and by engaging effectively with audience members. What is a magic festival without a token rabbit in a hat as well? Anthony made sure he ticked that box. He’s not short of skill either, displaying his unicycle prowess and entertaining with magic ranging from a card trick to making a dove appear from a burning pan.
The line up for MagiComedy changes throughout the festival, although both Sue Ann Webster and Mat Unwin feature in seven out of the eight shows. There is a special show to be performed in Italian on the 3rd of October.
The Melbourne Magic Festival runs from September 22nd – October 4th. See www.northcotetownhall.com.au for the full guide.
